Phonics

Key Stage 1 Phonics and Reading Schemes

What are the children going to learn?

At Sacred Heart Catholic Primary, children learn phonics throughout Early Years and Key Stage 1. It is taught daily, in short sessions so that children build up and practise the skills they need to use in reading and writing.

Practising the sounds correctly is really important!

Here is a video which shows you how to say all the sounds we work on with the children.

The school follows the Letters and Sounds programme:

PhaseTwo.pdf

PhaseThree.pdf

PhaseFour.pdf

PhaseFive.pdf

PhaseSix.pdf

Each year group works on a phonic phase:

Year 1 works on phases 2, 3, 4 and 5

Year 2 works on phases 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Children move to the each new phase when they can confidently read and write using these sounds.

Here are the sounds and words taught in each phase:

Reading

How can I help my child with reading at home?

Please spend time finding out about how we teach your children to read at Sacred Heart School. We use a range of reading schemes throughout school and children are listened to regularly as well as being involved in guided reading sessions and being read aloud to.
