We love reading and we love to celebrate it across the school
We strongly believe that reading for pleasure is key to the success of our children and do all we can to encourage this. We have a busy and creative Library - please see our separate page for all the fun and exciting events and information.
We ask that parents read regularly with their children at home - ideally every night - to share a love of reading and build on the skills that children are learning in school. All of our children have a reading book that is matched to their phonics phase or reading ability and a book they have chosen to share with their family at home - either from the Library or their class reading corner.
We have a half termly Reading Reward for our Superstar readers - children that read regularly and/or access our Library frequently.
Recent rewards have been:
Spring 1 2022 - Individual children and classes received rewards and treats for their hard work in reading. As we were in bubbles, we couldn't celebrate together this time.
Autumn 2 2021 - Jingle Jangle Christmas
PANDEMIC - we couldn't continue our reading rewards but gave out lots of prizes to our amazing readers whenever we could.
Spring 2019 - Reading and Raving - a fun dance workout run by Transfigure Fitness
Summer 1 2019 - an afternoon at our local astroturf Pulse - playing games, using the parachute and 5-a-side football
Summer 2 2019 - a cinema morning screening of Lego Movie 2 with blankets, cushions, treats and friends
Autumn 1 2019 - Disco run by Marvellous Events combined with some Robotic programming
Autumn 2 2019 - Polar Express cinema experience - hot chocolate and marshmallows in their PJs and dressing gown.
‘The library is enchanting...’ (Ofsted 2016)
Here at Sacred Heart School we not only strive to develop a love of reading
with our children but we also try to instil a passion for everything literary. The
library plays a significant role in working to achieve this. The library is the heart
of our school.
The school library offers children a huge variety of both fiction and non-fiction
books to choose from. All of which are regularly updated with new books. We
use MLS, Junior Librarian computerised system.
To supplement our reading stock we also subscribe to the Cumbria Library
Service, which means we can have up to date books in every classrooms
courtesy of the mobile library bus and topic boxes.
Our librarian, Mrs Needham, was one of only 3 librarians on the School Library
Association Honours List 2014. https://www.sla.org.uk/tracey-needham.php
